Back when I was a kid, there were old sayings, cliches, regional words and phrases folks in the country used every day. I grew up hearing them and using them, whether or not they made sense literally. The title of this book - Shootin' the Bull - is one of those phrases meant figuratively, one which I consider synonymous with “shootin' the breeze.” There were no bulls shot or otherwise harmed. My personal definition of “shootin' the bull” is just talking about whatever happens to come up in conversation or thoughts. It brings to mind situations such as gabbing over the fence with a neighbor or sharing opinions around the water cooler. In solitude or on a soapbox, perhaps just between friends, it all boils down to musings or chit-chat about whatever is happening in your world, or even your mind. In the South, “shootin' the bull” is an acceptable way to describe conversation or a laid-back activity with others. It can also be a fair assessment of someone sharing tall tales, such as the outlandish size of the fish that got away. Many of these short pieces of writing are presented tongue-in-cheek with levity in mind. Most of the tales, opinions and pure imaginings I've included here are packed with my style of wit and silly sarcasm, as well as simple humor found in everyday life. There are also some serious viewpoints on controversial issues thrown in for good measure.

Wow! What a collection of short stories! Southern charm and wit pours from every page. I hail from a small town in Tennessee and found the stories all very relatable.*** Just finished the second book and it is every bit as amazing as the first!

Shootin' the Bull Southern Wit and a Dab of Country Common Sense Linda Lea Brewer 9780692474617 Books Reviews
The best aspect of this book for me is the fact that the reader doesn't have to have a lot of time to enjoy the many varied short stories and columns. Unlike novels that require time to read, one doesn't have to read this entire book to enjoy the many endings to the cleverly written excerpts of life, from encounters with animals who sneak unseen into the author's bedroom to cause great alarm and require creative means to evict, to encounters with public officials and clubs, Brewer manages to find humor in all things which she gives to the reader, a laugh or a chuckle and a smile. It's a book you can take with you anywhere to enjoy while you are waiting, either in a doctor's office or in an airport, anywhere.
Shootin’ the Bull, by Linda Brewer, is a delightful collection of essays on topics ranging from skunks as dinner guests to children as tax liabilities. Brewer’s easy journalistic style makes the reader feel as if you are sitting on the front porch laughing and carrying on a conversation. Her vignettes are short and can be digested quickly, but that doesn’t mean her topics are all humorous. She also voices the exasperation and outrage many of us feel in response to news stories that break our hearts. This is a good book to keep by your bedside or carry with you as you travel. I look forward to reading the later volumes.
Opened this book after work last night - didn't put it down till I had read the whole thing. Some things I read twice. A laugh out loud collection of stories. I can't wait to get the next one! You've got to read this book!
Written with a southern voice reminiscent of Lewis Grizzard or Jill Conner Browne, Shootin' the Bull takes me back to growing up in the rural south. Linda Brewer is able to put a humorous spin on almost any situation. Full of humor & down home writing.
